How your behaviour improves your business delivery

Behavioural Intervention

It feels great to be an Architect, and it equally feels great to know how to effectively use one’s tools. However, skill is not enough in the quest for success. Personal intervention is critical in achieving our tasks day in, day out; and have you recognized at all, that the most difficult person you can exercise a Stop-Command on is yourself; yes you!!! Power without control is nothing. Knowing our individual strengths and weaknesses empowers us with self-awareness, but controlling these personality traits is the first step in fully realizing our potentials.

Ask me how?

The tanker driver experience

Let us begin by putting you in a scenario wherein you are a driver and your task is to deliver a tanker containing 33,000 litres of Petrol to a fuel depot within the hour. You start to drive very fast down a hill, trying to ensure a timely delivery; with an assumption that everyone on the road should realize you have a deadline and therefore make way for you; even though you have limited control over your speed as gravity is also assisting you to gather momentum.

Now you are already enjoying the cool breeze and whistling away, with high optimism of meeting the delivery deadline when suddenly, another road user veers onto the road ahead of you without caution. Do you know that in order to avoid a potential crash, you must keep your concentration on the road, apply your vehicle’s pedal brake to slow down and gradually come to a halt within reasonable time and distance? Equally, after making that stop and you are clear of danger, you would need to step on the throttle pedal to accelerate onwards to achieving your task and this time, in a safe and controlled manner.

This scenario is similar to what we experience in our daily lives in individual or team efforts to become better architects and business professionals. It is therefore okay to say now, that you are the driver of a fuel tanker every day and can consider the brake pedal and the throttle pedal as tools of Behavioural Intervention in your daily journey of delivering fuel at the depot. It is a fast-paced world, where we have to get the building designs done as quickly as possible and above the desire to achieve our objectives with flare, comes the responsibility to achieve the best results in the best way; The Right Way.

Your psychological pause and play buttons should be applied whenever the need arises for behavioural intervention while dealing with your customers. Push your pause button when you feel you are about to react to your stakeholders or a client in an external & visual way such as saying or doing something that will get you or your team in trouble or cause regret. Push your play button when you feel yourself about to react in an internal & non-visual way, such as not doing something you know you should do for your clients.

Think of the ways that your business and/or brand can be hurt because of your personality reactions and you will appreciate these “installed by nature” control buttons; also continue to get feedback from your stakeholders to better understand your strengths and potential limiters. Only then, have you begun your journey to improved business delivery? We wish you the best.
